Example of an initial inquiry message to Rona
Dear Rona
Help! I need 5 black and white cartoons on global warming by Wednesday week for my company e-newsletter. The newsletter targets staff and management as well as government representatives (about 100 people). Most of them know very little about the topic but are interested. We produce the newsletter quarterly and would like to use them to illustrate the main points in a special on global warming. We may use the graphics in follow up publications over the coming year. I am on a very strict budget of $1,000 for graphics.
Can you help? Please advise ASAP. Thanks Jo
If you have no idea of how many graphics you want tell me what your budget is and we can work something out together.
I will respond within THREE working days. I will tell you if I am available and if this is a topic of work that I do. If I have enough details, I will give you a price.
STEP 2
We agree on the process, what is required, timelines, payment details and costings. We also agree on Copyright and Licensing (more on this below).
The Process of Creating the Cartoons
You will need to work with me to develop the cartoons as follows:
Sounds a bit dry but believe me, the creative process is often great fun for both parties IF we keep the process clear.
STEP 3
We work through the process above and make payments as per the schedule below.
The Payment Schedule
The creative process starts after we have agreements on the payment schedule:
Copyright and Licensing
I always retain copyright of my cartoons or images. We will agree a licencing arrangement and fee for the graphic that suits your needs. Licensing arrangements and costs are based on the nature of your site or publication, audience, how you will use the images, circulation and duration of use. Ask me and we can work it out.
Credit where it is due
Whenever you use any of my images you must credit me, Rona Chadwick, and my website, rona.com
Thanks for your consideration.

The Process of Creating the Cartoons
You will need to work with me to develop the cartoons as follows:
- We agree on what we will do and how much it will cost;
- Ensure that you have the authority to decide on the cartoons. I do not work to a committee. I only work with the person authorised to make the decisions. This saves time and energy and makes for a smooth ride. Remember a camel is a horse designed by a committee;
- I draw up roughs on the topic areas;
- I email them to you by the agreed date for consideration and comment;
- You get your comments and suggestions back to me by the agreed date;
- I make changes and finalise in line with your comments and suggestions; and
- I email the finished cartoons and final invoice for payment to you.
Sounds a bit dry but believe me, the creative process is often great fun for both parties IF we keep the process clear.
STEP 3
We work through the process above and make payments as per the schedule below.
The Payment Schedule
The creative process starts after we have agreements on the payment schedule:
- 50% up front payment
- Balance on finalisation of work
